Carry on baggage latitude
We are taking several internal flights within both New Zealand and Australia via Qantas in addition to the int'l flight. Qantas carry on allowance for both economy int'l and domestic flights is one bag 18" X 13" X 8" not to exceed 15 lbs in weight. How restrictive are they on this allowance? What if I have a bag that is 16" X 12" X 10" - will they allow it or am I taking a risk? They also say that a small camera in a case or a women's purse can be extra. I have a small camera bag about 10" X 5" X 5". Will they generally say yes of no to such an additional item?

Last time I flew Qantas was 1991. At that time they were far more restrictive than No. American airlines regarding carry-ons - I would think that now it would be even more restrictive. It is amazing what you can pack in a small bag in terms of necessities. Just put what you need to survive (if your luggage is lost) in your carryon. Important medications (ie., diabetic), a change of clothes, shampoo and makeup (if you care about makeup, I dont).

I found that I could take on my purse in addition to my small carryon. You can place your camera in your carryon.

Again, I don't know what the events of the last three weeks have had in terms of changing the rules for this airline. But my guess would be that they are more restrictive than less.

Roy,
I fly regularly on Qantas domestically within both Australia and NZ and internationally between the two countries. Qantas are not strict on carry on bags. I never take anything except a laptop but I have seen people get on with baggage of all sizes and shapes.

The problems they encounter (especially on NZ domestic flights where the planes are 737's at best) is physically fitting their luggage in the overhead compartment. This then means they have to put it under the seat in front of them which makes for an uncomfortable trip.

David

Last time we flew Qantas from LA to Australia (two years ago), they checked all the carry-on luggage before passengers boarded. Large pieces were taken away and put in the cargo area and only pieces within the limits were allowed. So I guess it depends on who is on duty at the time.

So why don`t you call Qantas and ask them? They take all your measurements and total them, and if your bag is too long, but is also not as deep as restrictions allow, they take that into considerations and round out the numbers. I know they have gotten stricter lately. I will be on several qantas flights in Feb. and would rather not chance it. So why not check the questionable bag?
