I am from Canada and used my CIBC Visa Gold in Arizona in the spring of 2007 with no problems or fees and was in an accident which was the other persons fault and my visa insurance just took over and paid for the $10,000.00 damage to the rental car I was driving and then sued the other persons insurance.I didn't spend any time or money . Just made a couple phone calls and they looked after it.
HOWEVER remember most Visa card insurences do not cover the PLPD side of an accident so make sure you have that coverage through your own car insurance or buy it from the rental comany at a premium price. No PLPD was required in the accident I had so the Visa's collission covered everything.
Just make sure you know what you have before you leave.Remember different Countries have different rules.
Have a great trip.

Greetings:

I rented my vehicle from Apex. Picked it up in Christchurch, traded at the ferry and returned to Auckland airport.

No extra charges.

The vehicle was used but fine with me. My own at home is also used of course. I bought it new about 14 years ago so by now it is WELL used.

If memory serves me right, the deductible was NZ$ 750.00.

As I rented for 2 months, the daily insurance rate was geting too close to the deductible. Therefore I decided to NOT get the insurance.

As a tourist, I traveled mostly in the less busy hours. Those busy traffic hours were reserved for sleeping in, relaxing over breakfast and enjoyment in general.

Auckland and Wellington are bigger cities where collision is more likely. Smaller centres are safer so between my hours of travel and the loctions I was mostly in, I did not worry about insurance.

We rented a full sized vehicle with the biggest engine possible for one month on my credit card and the second month on my wife's card in order to qualify for the 30 day credit card insurance limit.

Apex had no problem putting our rental on those two contracts.

Even though my credit card offers this coverage, I understand that they do not like to pay out so I expected a hasel if I did need that service.

My rental cost was much better than the new vehicles would be from the national companies.

Good luck and have a great trip.
