Cairns lodging question
I'll be flying into Cairns on a Saturday night in late September, arriving at 22:00. My desire is to find somewhere nearby to spend the night, then rent a car the next morning (either at the airport or downtown, if one is markedly cheaper), spend half the day on the SkyRail, and then drive up to Mossman and check into Silky Oaks Lodge, where I'll be spending four nights.
Can anyone recommend a hostel or moderately priced motel in Cairns that will be relatively quiet and not mind my checking in after 22:00? (Many hostels list their reception hours as ending at 19:00 or 20:00, and those with later hours are likely to be the big noisy partyish places.) Extra points if the lodging in question has a shuttle from the airport that would still be running at that hour (though I could always take a cab).
I'd rather not start my driving career in OZ after dark.
That's why I'm waiting until the next morning to get a car. (Recommendations for rental car companies are also welcome.)
Thanks!

This airport is about 10 minutes from the town so either way you are not far from anywhere.
I don't know about hostels but I would be inclined to book myself into Pat's B&B which is about 6 minutes from the airport. When people are coming in late there are lights left on and a note left ( if she is not up that is ) to show you where you are to go and you can just pop into bed and get up refreshed in the morning for a lovely breakfast -her B&B is Lilybank B&B by the way - and you can pick her brains over breakfast for ideas of where to go, what to do etc. A cab to her place would cost you about $10AU

You could try Shooting Star as the manager lives on site. You can only ask. I think by memory about $70/night, Basic but ok for a night.
email is [email protected]
Right around the corner is a car rental place where we picked up but were able to drop off at the airport on our way home. Just can't remember which company it was. I could figure it out by address if you are interested.

There's a board at Cairns airport with free (to you) phone showing everything available and whether or not there's a night porter.
Wherever you stay around Cairns, Sugarland Car Rentals will bring car to door at no charge and let you return it to airport for an extra small charge (they have to take 2 staff to aiport to pick up car). Or they may ask you to return car to their office and drive you to airport from there. Far, far cheaper than using Silky Oak's limo service. For Sugarland's prices see www.sugarland.com.au
