Monica
While Brisbane is a great city, if you have limited time and have to choose I'd go for Cairns - from there you can go up to Port Douglas (about 40 minutes further north) and get to see the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree, Cape Tribulation etc. It is all pretty spectacular. See other postings here under Port Douglas and the Reef for more ideas. August in the north of Australia is a good time to go - not too hot, but still very nice.
Have fun
Michelle
go for cairns! i was there for about 3 weeks in dec 1996 with my 3 sons (aged 5, 8,11) and enjoyed everything from port douglas (drive from cairns was exquisite), to great barrier reef, and horse riding in the country (something unaffordable in singapore). even visited undarra lava tubes - stayed in tent with kangaroos outside in early morning. get info from tourist bureau when you arrive. they offer lots of help. even my australian friend who lives in cairns had not heard of undarra! but be prepared to drive about 3-4 hours. enjoy yourself!
