Hi, David!

As a Sydneysider who has only been to Melbourne three times in fifty years, I am really not the best to advise on this one; but while you are waiting for a true Melbournian to answer you (they are lovely people, but inclined to be slow readers) maybe this will be of some use to you.

Bayswater is an outer suburb of Melbourne, only about 30km due east from the centre of the city, so it should be extremely well-served by public transport, which is always the cheapest way to go. www.connexmelbourne.com.au lists Bayswater Railway Station, and offers to plan your route for you, but when I tried it, it was so slow in responding that I gave it away... however, the site is worth your visit, as it will help you to adjust to the pace of life in Melbourne. A quicker and more useful URL is www.alphalink.com.au/~parkerp/melsuba.htm, which will give you train and bus routes, fares, timetables, and even a street map of Bayswater. Hope this helps!

The public transport can be a bit painful in the outer suburbs, so I'd suggest either a taxi from the city (probably about $30/40 each way to your destination). Alternatively get the train to Bayswater and catch a taxi from there. Like Mary, I'm intrigued! We live in a neighbouring suburb and I can't imagine any one sightseeing in Bayswater.

thank you so much for your prompt responses. i had an inkling that people would wonder why i want to go to bayswater. i may be mistaken but there is a kenworth truck assembly plant there which i am interested in visiting if i have time.
by the way, i like the comment about the melbournians being slow! why hurry anyway!
thanks again. you folks have a nice day!

I'm not sure if that is where the Kenworth truck assembly plant is. But wherever it is I strongly suggest you contact them beforehand and make arrangements to visit before making the journey.
As for slow (!) - we Melburnians have so much else to fit into our days as we live in the "Worlds Most Livable City" !!!!!
