Australia in April
My husband and I are supposed to go on a twoweek vacation to Australia -
April 7 to April 22 from Los Angeles.
Our plans are to go to Sydney, Melbourne and
Cairns as well as a Great Barrier Reef
island. I just realized
that it will be Easter break for much of
Australian schools. Does anyone know if thiswill present extreme crowding? I do not mindcrowds. I have been to Martha’s Vineyard and The Hamptons in the summer with no
issues. I actually think it’s fun when
there are people around. I just want to makesure it won’t be insanely busy and prevent
us from seeing local atttractions.
Also, please let me know if you have been toGreen Island Resort and your thoughts. Only going for two nights and would like
someplace pretty but not more than $500 USD per night and easy to get to by boat.
Thanking You in advance!

I would advise against Green Island. It is an overcrowded tourist trap & the worst option fo seeing the Great Barrier Reef, IMO. I would do a live aboard for a couple of days, or do several day trips from Palm Cove or Port Douglas. Or go somewhere else, like Lady Eliot Island.
It’s Easter Holidays for our schools, but only quite short, so probably won’t bother you too much.

I wouldn't wprry too much about school holidays. Schools don't go on holidays until 14 April and many people in Sydney or Melbourne will travel to the coast for holidays. We have a population of 24 million (4 million in school) in an area the size of the continental United States so overcrowding shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Easter is a very busy time with people going away but you should be able to get in somewhere without reservations. It might not be your first choice though. If you start booking accommodation ahead now you'll have a bit more choice, though Easter is not far away. I haven't been to Green Island but have heard it's not a great choice. You could check out these islands for location, price and how to access, some will be by boat and others by flying in.
Lady Elliot Island
Fitzroy Island
Heron Island
There are lots of options for day trips out to the reef from Port Douglas, some on small boats, others on large catamarans that carry hundreds. Some companies have pontoons moored on the reef with showers/toilets, eating areas etc. You could try doing a couple of different day trips if you decide not to stay on an island.
Have a great stay and don't forget to Slip, Slop, Slap
