Australia and Great Barrier Reef

I am 78 years of age and my wife is 76 We are fairly active for our age and have travled in most countries of the world and not on tours; just like to go and come as we please. We do not need luxury and like to travel in a reasonable manner. Where should we stay and what should we see?

I think you would like the Cairns area in N. Queensland where you can take day trips to the Great Barrier Reef, or visit the Daintree Rainforest. My 80-year old father came snorkelling with me out on the Reef so I don't think you'd have a problem! A tour group called Quicksilver operates day trips out of Cairns or Port Douglas to the GBR. They are excellent trips on a big catamaran, then when you get to the Reef they tie up to a huge pontoon (which has toilets etc.) You can swim or snorkel off the pontoon, or go in a semi-submersible to view the coral and fish if you don't want to get wet. You can book the tours when you get there quite cheaply and they pick you up and return you to your hotel - even outside of Cairns. They are very well organized.
I prefer Trinity Beach as a place to stay (about 10k north of Cairns) The Amaroo is a good modest hotel there on the beach. Or Port Douglas is beautiful too with many restaurants and places to stay. I'm sure there is info on the 'Net.
Don't miss the Daintree River and rainforest while you're in the area. The Daintree Ecolodge is wonderful and does nice 3 day packages.
Have a wonderful trip!
