Arriving in Sydney
I have an option of taking a flight from the US and arriving in Sydney at 8:30 PM or 6:10 AM. Is there a preference bewteen a night or early morning arrival? How long does it take to get into the city center from the airport?

Larry
Larry -- I don't think it matters that much, although you might hit more more morning rush hour traffic if you arrive in the morning (you don't specify the day of the week).

Depending on where you are staying, I'd say it takes about 30-40 mins.

The bigger difference of the time of day you arrive is how it will effect your body jet-lag wise. You don't say where in the US you'll be coming in from, but I have done the trip dozens of times & I personally prefer coming in at night. Chances are always high that I have not slept very well on the plane which helps me get a better night's sleep that first night right away.

If I arrive in the morning, I have to try to stay awake as long as possible & walk around zombie-like that first day. Believe me, that pillow looks pretty good around 5:00 p.m. but you don't want to fall for that because you'll be up & at 'em at 3:30 a.m.!

Just my 2 cents (US)

I arrived in Sydney at about 6:00 am after a long flight. After arriving at the hotel shortly, the hotel staff said check in time is about 2:00PM because they still have to wait for the guest to check out, then clean the room.

After a long tiring flight, I was not in the mood to wait hours before I could get into the hotel room to rest and wash up.

Therefore, you should consider the check in time of your hotel.

Larry:
By all means, arrive at 8:30PM. After 14 1/2 hours in the air, you're going to want to go directly to a waiting room. This will help with the jet lag as well. You'll wake up refreshed and ready to go in the morning.
Been there. Done that.
John
