apparel in Australia

My wife and I have been on several escorted tours and we have always purchased the appropriate Fodor's book well in advance to help us to be more knowledgeable and self-sufficient in the country of choice. In mid-Jan, 1998 we will go on a 22 day escorted tour of Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. We have perused your 1997 Australian book and it is superb but leaves us a little wanting in the recommended apparel department. We plan, in the main, to wear 'golf clothes'--knit cotton golf shirts and linen/cotton shorts [walking short lengths] for daytime and will have a sweater or two, light sport jacket, long khaki pants and perhaps a collared shirt or two for evening wear. More or less what we would wear here in Upstate New York in the summertime. Does this sound appropriate? Do you have suggestions? If you choose not to answer this inquiry, would you please direct us to an alternate fount of knowledge. Your comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Your wardrobe sounds perfect Billy. We are very relaxed dress-wise. Wear what you feel comfortable in and what is weather appropriate. January is mid summer and walk shorts are acceptable anywhere during the day. I've even seen people wearing shorts to evening performances at the Opera House - although I would not do this myself. Make sure you do a tour on Sydney Harbour. It's at its best in January when most people are on vacation. I hope you enjoy your trip.

Yes I must agree that it sounds that you have the dress about right. As it will be mid summer and hot wear clothes that "breath". Good luck with the trip and feel free to e-mail me if you have any other questions.

Hi Billy. So far the advice has been sound. I live in Brisbane and should you make our beautiful state - remember your swimsuit. January can be very muggy here - storms are the norm, but do not last long. Bring your umberella. You will definitely need shorts and T's here and if you go further north you will find that is all that is required. Brisbane does not wear shorts out at night, but light slacks and open necked shirt are acceptable.
Ties are out. Have fun and plan to stay as long as you can in Queensland. Many hours in and around Brisbane and Gold Coast and/or Sunshine Coast - go to the Islands. Head to the Barrier Reef, see the Whitsundays. Superb, lucky you.
