Alarming news about Yellow Eyed Penguins

I assume this only refers to the mainland population and not those on NZ's subantarctic regions.

It's a tragedy to see the iconic Yellow Eyed Penguin, honored on NZ's $5 bill, as a victim of the sixth extinction, despite heroic efforts by the local community and supporters from around the world to save it. I can't imagine the southeast coast of the South Island without it, especially Dunedin. They're part of the city's identity, seen on city murals, celebrated with lifesize penguin statues, and even on a stained glass window in St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral in Dunedin's Octagon.

On a happier note, the population of Takahe, which was thought to be extinct until its rediscovery in 1948, is booming at 375—so many, that 30 of them were just released into Kahurangi National Park. https://www.stuff.co.nz/environment/...from-the-brink

Ph.D. student Mel Young and her helpers are trying to shine a light on the dark plight of these endangered penguins.
