I can't beat what Diamantina offers - she is a legend with her advice! Your wife would love Tiritiri Matangi as it is quite unique and beautiful. When my kids were in primary school they did an annual day trip there and I was always the first to put up my hand to be a parent help for the day. You can see takahe there - big native birds who will be very interested in your lunch.
Are you missing Kare Kare? That's a shame. I think Taylor Swift did a video there as well. Crowded House are quite the legend here in NZ. I can remember when some of them were in Split Enz. Now Neil Finn has joined Fleetwood Mac so there's no limit globally where a Kiwi might end up. Go for it Neil.
Queenstown is touristy and can be busy but if there is snow on the mountains and the TSS Earnslaw is steaming across the lake it's a beautiful place. If you are interested in old things the Earnslaw built in 1912 is the oldest working steam ship in the Southern Hemisphere. She was built in Dunedin in pieces and then taken by train to Queenstown and assembled there which is a pretty amazing achievement really.
We go to Waiheke a lot and it's lovely over there. Your son might like the "Wild on Waiheke' archery and other games or the zipline through the bush at Ecozip Adventures. Great views from up there as well.

Thanks, Tasmangirl, though I don't know think I deserve such praise. I enjoy watching birds and wildlife, though, so it was easy to offer tips for Clark's wife. But I haven't a clue about what a teenage boy would enjoy. Your idea about the Waiheke zipline is great one! Mom and son can have lunch over there as well. If they enjoy hiking, they might enjoy a walk on Rangitoto to see the lava tubes and views from the summit.
We stayed at Bethell's Beach Cottages just two days after Taylor Swift filmed a video on the beach there. There was some controversy around her crew disturbing dotterel nests. She said she thought it was one of the most beautiful beaches she'd seen.
