Abel Tasman or Hamner Springs / Arthur's Pass
We are planning a 22 night trip in New Zealand for next December, we'd like to see everything but unfortunately we can't. We have to choose between Abel Tasman (I quite fancy swimming with the seals myself) and Hamner Springs / Arthur's pass (my husband's preferred option as he would like a relaxing stop at the hot springs). What should we choose? Thanks for your help!

Personally, I'd go for Abel Tasman - it's absolutely gorgeous. We've been to Hanmer Springs, and while we enjoyed our stay there, I think Abel Tasman has more to offer. Hanmer Springs is a town of about 750, and the main attraction is the Thermal Pools. There are some nice hikes and biking paths in the area as well. In my opinion Arthur's Pass isn't that appealing and pales in comparison to Abel Tasman.

I've not been to Abel Tasman but I have been to Arthur's Pass. Beautifully scenic but that's it. We had lunch there at a Bavarian style restaurant. It was excellent, however not much else to do there. Unless you like to hike. Lots if hiking trails.
We were there in November for a day. Rained all day. Took a motor coach from Christchurch and returned by train.
John

Without a doubt Abel Tasman. Hamner springs are nice and the setting pretty - but I've been to much better in, say, Canada. Again Arthurs Pass is beautiful but not world class. Abel Tasman is world class for scenery, especially if you want to walk along the coast or just laze on the beach ( we also saw killer whales on our boat trip). In the end I thhink it depends on whetther you want mountains or coast ( but there are better mountains to be had even within NZ!!)
