4 days in Tasmania - plan
We are planning to visit Tasmania (Hobart) from Melbourne for 4 days.
We would like to see places by an organized tour or self drive.
* Any predefined routes available for 4 days ?
* List of must see places ?
* Recommended stay/hotel information ?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
Vebs

Hi,
Just to get the ball rolling - in 4 days with wheels I reckon u could visit Mt Field NP, Richmond, Freycinet - and spend the rest in Hobart. But the Tassie TB does a great map with some "named" drives - on line, a quick google has thrown up the following:
www.discovertasmania.com.au
there is an itineraries page. Sorry can't post as a link - still can't work that out but it may be cos I only have MS Works not the whole shebang.
Tassie is gorgeous and I'm just stating the usual must sees. If u are real outdoor people you could spend the whole time getting to and from Cradle Mt NP.
Freycinet and Stanley in the far NW are my own personal faves.
Have fun.

Vebs - what are your interests? is it general sightseeing, or is it bushwalking, wilderness, wildlife, or history?
I would opt for "self drive" as it gives you the chance to pull over to places like, berry farms, cheese manufacturers, oyster farms, and in addition you can stay longer at a given sightseeing attraction.
Tasmania, unfortunately has "must see" attractions in just about every corner of the island, thats why so many people go for 7 days or more, and circle the island, to see all the must sees, like Hobart, Richmond, Mount Field National Park, Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsular, Huon Valley, Maria Island, Freycinet National Park, Bay of Fires National Park, Wineries outside of Launceston, LAunceston & the Gorge, Mole Creek Caves, Stanley & The Nut, Cradle Mountain, Savage River, Strahan & Gordon River & Sarah Island Cruise, then back down towards Hobart, to the Southwest Wilderness and Styx River Forests. However, I would have to say, that my favourite MUST SEE would have to be at Strahan, with the Gordon River Cruise.
With only 4 days to see Tasmania, I would definitely "concentrate" on either the northern section or southern section, which would then allow you see more of that region.

Hi Alice/Tropo,
Thanks for your quick response.
Here is some additional information which can help you provide me more detailed trip planning.
* I have a 2 year old kid
* I cannot go for outdoor activities
* I can drive in and around Hobart
Since I am really in short of time, do you think its worth spending 4 days in Tasmania vs. spending in Melbourne. I initially had 3 days plan for Tasmania. Please let me know your thoughts.
Thanks

Vebs, definitely go for Tasmania, in preference to Melbourne. With a 2 year old child, no doubt the sighteeing will be for you, not the child. Melbourne is a large city, and large cities can be tiring for a parent & child. Tasmania is more scenic, less traffic, and less demanding than a larger city, like Melbourne.
Opt for the southern section...ie. Hobart and branch out from there to see some wonderful scenic spots & wildlife.
P.S./ Did you know that Hobart's peak traffic only lasts for 10 minutes weekday mornings.
Why stay in a large city, like Melbourne, when you can visit world heritage places in Tassie, and eat foods like, King Island Beef, berries, fresh fruits & vegatables, great wines, lovelly seafood (crayfish, Barilla Bay oysters, orange roughy or blue eyed cod, etz).....there's just no comparison, my friend.
