2weeks in Austrailia
We are spending 2 weeks in Austrailia and plan to spend 4 days in Sydney and then travel up the coast to Cairns...we are thinking about traveling by train. Would like any suggestions or informations about train travel on this route. Thanks

Long distance train travel in Oz, especially along the east coast, is boring and uncomfortable. Trains don't go near the coast, so not scenic, and not particularly cheap.
If you tell us what you want to see, then we can make some suggestions.

Hi Katben.
Echoing Margo's comment.
I don't know where you're from, but Australian distances are vast ( it's about 2500 kms SYD-CNS), and trains nothing like the fast trains of the northern hemisphere.
My Rome2Rio app indicates it will take you about 40 hours & $544 by train.
Cheapest option is to fly; more scenic might be to drive / take a bus Sydney to Brisbane & fly from there.
Details like when you will be here, whether you drive/ would rent a car and what attracted you to the idea of train travel for such a long distance will help us make some relevant suggestions.

We will be in Austrailia late Oct to around Nov 10th...just got back from a road trip to Alaska approx 3,720 kms on really bad roads so thought the train would be better. Have no problem renting car and driving on opposite side of road. Would love to see coast...we want to see as mush as we can in the limited amount of time we have....we are coming to Sydney by 25 days on a cruise ship so we will be hitting the ground looking for walking, hiking and swimming if possible. Had thought of spending our time in Tasmania as one option...thoughts?

You're coming at a good time, but if you're going north, best to do it first as the wet/stinger season starts around then.
To see as much as possible, I'd think flying to Cairns & renting a car there would be a better option than spending days driving / on a train to get there.
OTOH, you could certainly spend 3-4 days driving a mix of the Pacific (coast road) & New England highway to Brisbane & see a good variety.
If you haven't already done so, have a look at the Australia.com website to help you draft/ refine your priorities.
Tasmania is a beautiful State & you could easily spend a week there.
So much to see & do ... such a big country ... so little time ...
