Yufuin ryokan......?

We'll be visiting Yufuin and hoping to stay a few days in Oct.as it sounds nice.
Has anyone been there and can offer advice on - Getting there from Kumamoto.
A budget place to stay (say Y12000 for twin room )?
Renting a car to get around and see the area and good sights, places to eat etc.?

Most information is in Japanese only. If you can't find a Japanese speaker to help you you may have to wait until you arrive in Japan and ask the first place you stay or the first tourist info center to help you book. I'll give you some more choices, but they are all Japanese language. Google has a translation system for webpages that is not that bad, but not great either. You can get the main idea.

¥12,000 for 2 people seems to be a stretch for Yufuin. Ryokan typcially price per person and include dinner and breakfast. ¥6000 is not going to get you two meals and a bed, but ¥10,000 or so will..Yufuin appears to be an onsen town, and as a rule, onsen towns don't much cater to budget travelers..instead they are a destination in and of themselves, with visitors checking into an onsen hotel and not leaving until check out time...you eat, take a bath, eat, take a bath, sleep, take a bath, eat, maybe a last bath, check out.

http://rurubu.travel/hotel-list/440406.html is a 3 page list with price approximations.

http://www.jtbonline.jp/dom_yado/hotels/440406/ is jtb's 4 page list. You might contact your nearest JTB office for help if any of their listings are attractive to you.

Individual places:

If all options prove too pricey you may need to stay in another town where there are business hotels, which are cheap as a rule, though not particularly spacious or nice.

We're following up on these, thanks.
The youth hostel looks quite good actually and if we rent a car we can go a bit out of town to stay there.
Even they have a hot pool and cafe.

So we've booked into the Yufuin Country Road Y.H. at about Y10000 for private room with breakfast for 3 days. Rented a car through Tocoo and will use Yufuin as our base for the surrounding area. Thanks for help.
