Yogyakarta Accommodation

Hi will be travelling to Yogya in late May for three nights four days and want advice on Accomm that is central and a reputable online booking service. Accomm in Aus Dollars would be greatly appreciated. Really looking forward to trip, and have so far looked at the Mercure but want reall traveller advice. I like to be able to eat at more than just the hotel restaurant.

Hi Lyn, I'll be in Yogya in May as well, will be there from May 20 to May 27. We're staying at the Dusun Yogya Inn, which looks to be a very nice boutique hotel. I wanted to stay away from typical cookie cutter hotels such as Hyatt's and Sheratons etc. We're also spending one night at the Amanjiwo. Some good sites to book through are asiarooms.com, and accommodationsbali.com

When in May will you be in Yogya?

If you want to be a REAL traveller go to the Selekta on Jalan Sosrowijayan. Here you get a big clean room with fan and breakfast for around $US5 a day.

Yogya's a tough city to get around in. Aside from the Malioboro it's not set up for a casual stroll -- traffic, pollution, heat, noise, effectively no sidewalks. I stayed at the Melia for years as it was within walking distance of a lot of shops. It's an okay hotel very popular among Europeans with a nice pool area, but the last time I was there (which was maybe 7 years ago) it really needed an overhaul.

I now go for the Hyatt even though it's undeniably touristy. It helps so much to get away from the overpopulation to a serene and lovely place. It's on the road to Borobudur as well.

My experience is that wherever you stay you end up taking more taxis than you'd hoped.

Don't get me wrong, I like Yogya and love central Java. You will be well treated wherever you stay. I just like to experience the urban malaise in small portions.

I have never found a restaurant in Yogya that I could wholeheartedly recommend. I'm looking forward to recommendations!
