We did have a mini-tour of this hotel......Lynda being of the inquisitive type, and the room shown to us was quite exquisite.
I think that maybe................this is a little hidden gem.
Hanuman, as you are in Chiang Mai now, maybe you could take a look.

Thanks hanuman. We've not actually gone to CM to stay over night for a while. Might be nice to try another place... next time we go for an overnight, and not just a quick up and back for a day of shopping the markets and factories.

Hi Carol, Linda is asking "where does Carol shop" while she's is in CM? Is that too much of an open ended question,lol?
BTW, this mornings local news has lots of coverage of the one year anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami which, as you know, also hit Kona and the King Kamehameha hotel we all stayed at last Sept. The newscaster was interviewing the manager of the same store you went into in the lobby that had suffered the tsunami damage earlier that year and we thought of you and our wonderful time there.

Did not get the chance to visit the new hotel but took a look at the web site again and wow the rates are up there! One point to consider was that there were a lot of mosquitoes in CM for this time of year. A fully enclosed hotel will have much less of an insect problem if you don't like mosquitoes.

HT, tell Linda I like the markets at Hang Dong (Bantawai) and BoSang. You need a car/driver to take you there. What's she looking for? (diamonds/rubies/emeralds...not at those markets...
)
Also HT, what about the HNL GTG this year. That was really nice last year (thanks for reminding me...). Dates/locations? Anything yet?

When is it you guys leave for your meet-up with Bob and Karen? Might we 'do something' on the way (for them) to China? Although they've probably got tickets all lined up that by-pass Hawaii (a shame!!!).

HT, Good Morning from Texas US!!
An after thought ~~ you can reach Sgt. Kai (guide) at www.chiangmaitours.com He is very knowledgeable and is willing to take you places at your request, not just organized tours. We spent one day with him just going to the villages outside CM and immersing in the village culture. Very interesting and exciting!!!! We also spent other days with him at the 'tourist' spots. DON'T miss Doi Inthanon!
BTW, our stay at the Chedi was booked after we arrived in CM ~~ our original booked hotel didn't work out, so DH went online and found Chedi. We viewed the property one evening and moved there the next morning ~~ they even sent a car to pick us up at the 'other' hotel. Somewhere they is an earlier thread on this experience, and also on TA.
CM is definitely a slower pace than BKK, and is wonderful IMO. Each of these places has its own special qualities.

We've done the native villages thing the last time we were in Chiang Rai and don't think we will do it again unless there is something around to Chiang Mai that is special and not to be missed.
How do we get to Doi Inthanon? Do we need a driver and guide to get there? I think we might need a driver for Linda who wants to do some shopping on one of the days we are there so maybe we can do it then. The rest of the time we plan to relax, pool, massage, walk around,eat,drink, sleep then start all over again,lol.

HT ~~ Actually this sounds about like our stay at the Chedi last year ~~ minus the shopping. That's Carol's forte!! 55555 We did take a day or so for Sgt, Kai, but other than that it was VERY restful. I can't tell you how to get to Doi Inthaton since Sgt. Kai was driving, but it is the highest point in Thailand, and as I understand it (which may or may not be correct) will be the burial grounds for the King and Queen. Beautiful!!!! Also, have you see Bhuping Gardens near Doi Suthep. Again, if you are into nature and gardens ~~ as we are ~~ you might enjoy this. It is the seasonal residence of the Royal Family. Hanuman can tell you lots more about it, so maybe he will add to this.
Will we get to meet you and Linda in BKK in November. We will be staying at the same place as the rhkkmk (s). Hope we can all meet for dinner or a drink one evening ~~ and hope other Fodorites will join us.
Also, the shopping at Lamphun (?) out of CM was fun ~~ not the elephant town. We watched the weaving and then made a few purchases. There was not a lot of activity that day as it was the last day of Buddhist Lent and many of the people were at the temple. My memory takes a side track sometimes, so some of the name of towns may be inaccurate. But it was glorious!
