Where to go in December??

We are looking for ideas for a fun, relaxing, beautiful and interesting family Winter holiday in Asia...We will have about 2 weeks and are considering Vietnam/Cambodia, Thailand or Australia. Of course we are aware that some of these areas could be having rainy season in December so any advice you have would be appreciated! A few years we went to Phuket and loved it; we are considering a return trip but also feel it would be nice to see a new area we haven't been to, such as Vietnam or Australia. (We currently live in Asia.)

Australia is a very good idea, it is of course summer there in December. Bondi beach for Christmas Day would be a hoot, or any other time in December I would think. Lots to do and see there. New Zealand might be another idea as well, really beautiful country and lots of activities there for a family (and of course the whole Lord of the Rings thing). Vietnam generally should be OK I think, I know that they had some unusual and heavy rain in December last year, but I think that was an anomaly. I think their rainy season ends in November in most places. Cambodia would be in good weather, as would most of Thailand (except Koh Samui and places on the Gulf of Thailand, i.e. east side of the isthmus). A trip to say Bangkok and Cambodia and/or Laos might be interesting. Not sure how old your children are and whether this kind of sight-seeing (e.g. temples) would appeal to them.

The Philippines are in great weather in December, and a place like Palawan would be really beautiful. One drawback there might be if your family would be bored with 2 weeks of snorkeling, diving, swimming, waterskiing, kayaking, etc. as there aren’t any real sightseeing opportunities. But lots of water activities.

December is a pretty good month weather-wise in many places in SE Asia, check weather-base.com. For beaches, I would avoid the east coast of Malaysia and Koh Samui area, and Sabah, Sarawak and other places on Kalimantan (Borneo), they will be rainy and/or overcast. Bali will be a bit on the rainy side, but less so than east cast of Malaysia so is not a bad choice, IMO, and there is so much on offer there in terms of culture and activities (rafting, biking) that a little cloud cover may not be an issue to you. You could rent a house there and then use that as a base to explore the island.

We went to Bangkok, Siam Reap, Chiang Mai and Railey Beach in early December a few years ago and the weather was great everywhere we went.

Alternatively, have a look Java,Bali in Indonesia. It will be in the rainy season, indeed. But the environment is amazing. Rich of cultures. Get a guide book or other informations and find the keywords Java or Bali. Have a perfect plan!
