What do to between Hong Kong and Beijing

I am heading to China in a few weeks. I plan on starting in Hong Kong and taking a train from Gangzhou to Beijing. Does anyone know any interesting places between Gangzhou and Beijing. I would like to experince something different from Hong Kong and Beijing. Any suggestions on trains or transportation to use will be helpful.

How much time do you have to spare between the two?

None of the major cities you'll pass through - Guangzhou, Changsa, Wuhan, Zhengzhou - are particularly interesting. However, just west of Zhengzhou is Luoyang - one of the ancient capitals of China, with some famous sites like the Longmen Grottoes.

Luoyang is off the main Guangzhou-Beijing line, but you can get direct trains Guangzhou-Luoyang and Luoyang-Beijing.

I have about a week to spare between the two cities. My goal is to stop in another city or town that has the most concentrated sites.

A week? It's a lot of time to spend in just one place. With that much time, go to Xi'an or Shanghai.

From Gangzhou you could take a bus to Guilin/Yanghuou. Spend a few days, then take train from Guilin to Xian (you might have to change - I did this in a roundabout way).

So just something for you to check you.

Guilin and area are very worth a visit, and though Xian is famous for the Terracotta Warriors what I will always remember is the Great Mosque and just wandering the streets.

It may be too much for the time you have - but yours to decide.

Happy travels.

Just got back from China - MUST go to Guiling/Yangshou. Incredibly beautiful, laid back, affordable.

Plus in Yangshou there are a lot of foreign backpackers - great vibe.

Incredibly beautiful, you can rent bikes and just explore.

Also Huang Shan (a few hours outside of Shanghai in Anhui province). Another incredible place. You climb these steep mountains that break through the clouds; though not for those who have fear of heights.
