Oops LynnieD, I misread your email.
I don't have a complete itinerary but places that are on my list are (with estimated number of nights – and not necessarily in this order, as I’m not sure of the right flow of the trip yet):
- Beijing (4 nights)
- Luoyang (2 nights) (or maybe, if possible, as a day trip from Beijing?)
- Xian (2 nights)
- Shanghai (3 nights) with a day trip to Tong Li and Suzhou
- Guilin (3 nights) with a Li river cruise; Day trip to Longsheng
- Hong Kong 3 nights (2.5 days)
I have 23-24 days for this trip (unless the expenses really add up then I’d keep it closer to 19-20 days) and I haven’t figured out the remaining days. I am leaning against taking a Yangtze cruise and would probably prefer more time to other cities/towns. But I would like some relaxing time too. I could add another day in HK for a day trip someplace.
Once I really get into my books, I’ll “officially” post my itinerary for everyone to comment.

Regarding hotel location choices: While taxis are very cheap, traffic can be horrid. So in my opinion, given a choice, I would stay somewhere convenient to some of the sites or shopping that interests you, because you don't want to waste all your time in a taxi regardless of how low the cost is.

You are right regarding location and traffic, but it depends on the city. Beijing is very large but traffic wasn't a major problem. The worst traffic was in Shanghai, although we were very near a metro station which we could have used but didn't because we had a guide and driver.
