If you are spending your whole time in Thailand, then yes, you need to get a visa. If, however, you'll be taking a sidetrip to another country (Cambodia or Laos, for instance), you may not. If you go to another country and fly back in to Thailand you get another 30 day entry automatically. If you cross a land border to get back to Thailand, you only get 15 days.

If you are leaving Thailand and flying to another country such as Cambodia or Laos and have proof of this, then you will not need a visa. However if you are staying the whole time in Thailand or going to another country by land, then you will need a visa. It is not the Thai immagration that will cause you any problems but the canadian/us airline may refuse you boarding since you are not returning within the 30 day period.

OP
If you arrive to Thailand without a visa the inmigration police is goin to stamp your passport with a 30 permit, this permit can be extended for 7 days for a fee...1900 baht? at the Inmigration Police Office in Bangkok or any turistic places.
You do not need to go out of Thailand for to stay that amount of days
