Uzbekistan: Traveling costs and cost of visiting sites.
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Uzbekistan next year(April- May), I am trying to build a rough estimate of how much things might actually cost.
1. Is it actually possible(and easy) to exchange dollars to som for something like 2800/$ ? Even in smaller places like Bukhara or Khiva?
2. Is 10-15$ a day a realistic budget for food? I wont be eating in expensive places, and am a vegetarian so, will there be any options in local/low cost eateries, like pilaf, fruits and cheese, pizzas and stuff?
3. I couldnt really find out the cost of admission for sites, like Registan or the towers in Khiva or the "photography pass" in various cities ? Or are they mostly not very significant? Mosques would be free, right? Is there a list with all costs available somehwere?

Please visit the following website where you can find the information on the rates for different types of transport (air, train, bus and taxi):

Hi,
I just returned from Uzbekistan.
1. The official exchange rate is <2200 for USD1 and this can be done at exchange offices in hotels. In Tashkent, this is encouraged as the black market is not very accessible. Outside of Tashkent, in Samarkand and Bukhara, the black market rate I got ranged from 2500 to 2700 per US dollar. It's fairly easy to "exchange" money if you do not have contacts - simply purchase a souvenir in US dollars and obtain change in Sum from the vendor at the negotiated rate.
2. My simple meals of salads, shashlik and tea ranged from 10000 Sum to 25000 Sum so your budget is realistic if you're just having salads etc. Vegetarian options in entrees are rare... there are plenty of salad choices though e.g. Greek, tomato and onion etc. I had a vegetable pancake roll kinda thing in Samarkand and a delicious wheat soup somewhere else. Those were about the only straight out vegetarian stuff I remember being available.
3. The Registan is free and some mosques within mausoleum complexes require entry fees. Some of these fees were included in my walking tours so I can't say for sure how much they cost. But I don't remember paying more than 6000 Sum for any entry tickets elsewhere. Photography charges are usually 1000-3000 Sums extra. Sometimes I paid, other times I couldn't be bothered. At all times, nobody checked whether you took pictures and did not pay the fee.
I hope that helped you somewhat!
