Udapur hotel splurge: Oberoi or Lake Palace?

My husband and I are going to india for the first time in January and may decide to splurge on one hotel. Please let me know if you have been to either of these and which one you like better and why. Thanks so much!

hi shothyme77-
If you do a search for Udaipur and oberoi or lake palace in the search box on the upper right, you will see several past discussions on this comparison. To sum it up for you: definitely the Oberoi.

I would return to Udaipur just to stay at the Oberoi again! It is a gorgeous hotel, service is incredible, rooms and bathrooms huge, beds are comfortable, food is great, pool is beautiful.....

Though you arrive by boat on the lake, and it appears to be a private island, it is actually on the "mainland", so you can walk out the back into Udaipur.

If you do stay here, make sure to get up at sunset one morning. The sun rising over the lake is stunning.

I have not stayed at the Oberoi but I have stayed at the Lake Palace and thought it was at best mediocre and definitely not worth the money.

I wld stay at the Oberoi, and perhaps take a meal at the Lake Palace to see that property for history sake!

The lake Palace is a heritage property, a former PALACE of the Maharani of Mewar converted into a luxury hotel..It is beautiful and filled with history!

However, the Oberoi Vilas is breathtaking!.. I wld say it is a much more comfortable place to stay, all the modern amentities, stunning location and has far superior rooms!

My vote is for the Oberoi!

And actually, i am quite fond of Udaipur in general! Lovely place to visit, easy going, friendly locals, great sightseeing, and filled with the local color/tradition of the region..oh, and a great market to wander too..
namaste.Happy travels and feel free to drop me a line with any quesitons!
