Two Weeks in Bali-suggested itinerary

Beth and I are considering two weeks in Bali in June 2008. We'd appreciate any suggestions how to divide up our time. We don't want to spend all the time at a beach. Three locations would be perfect. Thanks.

Andy, here's a link to my six-part trip report on balitravelforum.com:

http://www.btf-archives.com/archive200307/11747.html

We stayed in three different locations:
1. Canggu, on the southern coast, just north of Kuta
2. Ubud
3. Lovina (on the northern coast)

Sounds great!

I've stayed in the Regency Club at the Hyatt at Sanur several times. It's a lovely property with gorgeous gardens and great swimming pools (the one with the cave is my favorite). I like Sanur, a small town on the coast.

Ubud area is of course a must.

The one area I would NOT stay in is Nusa Dua.

Another option is two places on Bali and one on Lombok. We loved Qunci Villas and the quiet of Lombok.

Andy, The symbol for Denpasar Airport is DPS not DNP. You can only get to Northern Bali by car. It's about 3-4 hours from the airport to Lovina with no stops.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I've searched this forum for some other help.

We're going to try to use United FF miles. We'll see about their efficacy( look it up Bob).

you spelled it wrong as usual...

you can drive from south to north in a couple of hours or less...no airport there if you tried to fly....

putu will take care of you....he has a cage in the back of his suv...

Pandas cannot be caged. We are born to roam free. Once we pick our dates, we will contact Putu.

Although we've spent time in Lovina both times we were in Bali, I wouldn't do it again. The Ubud area is so much more interesting and so much more beautiful. With 2 weeks, 2 locations is enough. Bali is much slower paced than Thailand, and in my experience, it's better if you slow down and sink into it and let the days happen. There isn't tons of sightseeing, the beaches aren't great at all - they are fine, but not "travel halfway around the world for" great.

Stay in one place long enough to get to know the people there. Avoid the chain hotels and stay local and small...staying local doesn't mean staying dumpy at all. You are really spoiled for choice in the small and nice category of accommodation.

Bali is a place where you can easily take part in cultural things rather than be a spectator, and I encourage you to do that...you can arrange in advance, or you can do it on the fly when you are there. There will be plenty of people you will meet who will be happy to help you set up learning experiences should you want that. It's also a great place to relax totally and enjoy a great massage, a swim and a cocktail.

If you have some free time around Ubud I would visit Penglipuran village for a look at how the local live.

Where can we hide? Now Bob is threatening to visit us when we go to Bali. This certainly fill up our quota of speaking to hotel managers and restaurant staff. Do they have any nude beaches in Bali? It might be safe there.

Pandas on Parade, a perfectly pleasing prospect.

Thanks Hanuman.

Andy -- if you are going to pick 3 locations, I would write to Putu as you plan to use him and ask him about the north coast. My sense from being in Bali in January was that the north coast suffered most from the decline in tourism, and many little restaurants, shops, etc. had closed.
The east coast is visually stunning with a great many historical sites to visit if you did want to choose three places, and might prove different enough to warrant a stay.

From reading your reports, you and Beth will adore Ubud. Tons of restaurants, shops, dance performances and all the nearby craft villages. And I agree with Kim about slowing down and letting things unfold. The Ubud tourist office actually posts trips to cremations and other cultural events with transport, and it's the little things I remember most, like the day we went to the Agung Rai Museum and happened on a young girls dance class, or the day we went to Kintamani and a family invited me to pray with them. I couldn't have planned any of that.
