Traveling to/from Zhangjiajie
Hello,
Me and my wife are planning on visiting Feng Huang, Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan mid March. We will be traveling from Hangzhou but so far haven't found any great ways to get there. The options we have found is either train 3,5-5 hours plus bus 4 hours or flying to Tongren, which would take 2,5 hours, but we would then have to leave very early in the morning.
The next problem is leaving the Zhangjiajie area. We wish to travel to Kunming and the options we have found are either train 4 hours plus another train 4 hours, or flying 5-6 hours but there doesn't seem to be any direct flights so we would have to change flights somewhere along the way.
If anyone here knows of any qiucker or more comfortable ways to travel - please let us know!
Many thanks,
Michael and Edit

It is a big country so you can expect to spend a fair amount of time on transportation especially for the places that are so far apart like in your plan. There are also very few direct flights to and from Zhangjiajie and many are seasonal.

That's right. Zhangjiajie is small and kinda remote. While we were in China, our tour operator arranged us a high speed train to Changsha from Guilin and then transferred to Zhangjiajie by a private car. But Zhangjiajie has comparativelys table flights to Xi'an and Beijing while these two cities enjoy quite easy access to any areas in China. So, if you are also visiting these two cities, go to Zhangjiajie in between then.

My apology if I didn't make myself clear enough. I meant to travel to Zhangjiajie in between, like visit Zhangjiajie after Beijing, then travel from Zhangjiajie to Xi'an since Zhangjiajie has stable flights to these two cities. Hope it is clear now.

#5 Sarah, your intent is clear but won't work. Xi'an-Zhangjiajie nonstop flights are seasonal only, generally running between sometime in May through around Oct 25. This routing will not be running in March in either direction. However, the more general point of possibly resequencing the domestic itinerary (to maybe take advantage of at least one nonstop flight segment in or out of ZJJ) is valid.
OP, I'm afraid that you've just found one of the incredibly annoying issues with Zhangjiajie--it's not generally streamlined to get in and out, and ends up either more uncomfortable or more time-consuming, or both. Especially in the offseason.
