Krabi is not the easiest place to get to by train. You can take an overnight train to Trang and then by bus on to Krabi. I have not done this route as I usually fly to there.

I just returned from Krabi 10 days ago and it is definetely worth your time to fly there. We flew on Thai Airways and purchased tickets on expedia.com - I think they were $115 round trip. Bangkok Airways and PB Air also fly to Krabi, but I believe with each you need to connect in Phuket.

Enjoy you time in Krabi - its amazing!

PB no longer fly to Krabi. Train to Surat Thani and take the bus, about 3 hrs

There are definitely flights with Thai Airways from Bangkok to Krabi but they get full quickly, as there are only a couple of flights a day. We got stuck taking a "super VIP" bus b/c the flights were sold out. 11 hour overnight bus - leaves at 6:30ish PM arrives around 5:30AM. You can book the bus through a travel agent. A little bumpy, but otherwsie not too bad of a ride. Cheaper than flight $20ish vs. $60.

Do note that Krabi is not that far from Phuket. The beaches of Krabi are mainly around Ao Nang. From Phuket airport to your beach hotel would take less than 2 hours. Bangkok-Phuket more than 12 flights per day. Thai flys just 2 x daily Bangkok to Krabi.
