Hi Speckles,
I am delighted you are going to Japan and await a trip report from you eagerly! Sounds like a great airfare too. Just another tip I have remembered. Eating at the 7/11 is really great but try not to withdraw money from their ATM unless you have to. Bank ATMs give so much more money back. I can't remember exactly how much, but it was a significant difference in the exchange rate and I really regret that it was something I didn't check before I left.
Have fun - I think you will! Kerry.

PS I can well understand how you would feel about the shared bathroom but it was very, very clean. I loved the Japanese style of the place but I think, that due to construction work of a retirement home going on nearby when I was there, would not recommend this place until that was all over. I like Hostel World as a good place to find accommodation as it covers budget hotels, B & B's and other accommodation types as well as Hostels. I have used Hostelworld extensively and always been happy. I enclose my review of Azuya Inn but recommend reading as many reviews as you can on any place you like, bearing in mind that one man's meat is another man's poison!

Loved it.Recommend highly.Charming & cosy.Raoul & staff were helpful & patient.Home away from home. Good quality toiletries provided free.5 minute shower ample & water conserving idea that should be used everywhere.Very clean. Air conditioner & TV. Japanese style floor mattress surprisingly comfortable but a little hard to get up off the floor at times! No real complaints and these would be largely due to the fact I am a bit older and have a mild disability.Very happy staying here.

On eating in public--we saw lots of people eating on buses and trains (they have a pushcart that sells food on the trains); also picnicing in the parks was common. What we did not see was people walking or standing along the streets eating anything.
