Did you go to Tibet on your own? If not, what guide did you use? Where did you pick them up? Did you have trouble getting the travel permits? How long did you stay? We are going in two weeks and would love to hear what you have to say.

Yes, I went to Tibet on my own but arranged for a guide and driver in advance based on a friend's recommendation. I used Tibet Windhorse Adventure Travels in Lhasa and they were excellent. They are the in-country operator for many high-end tours and booked all my arrangements including travel permits. They booked me in the Kyichu Hotel in Lhasa and it was fantastic. It is decorated in Tibetan-style and has a garden in the back where everyone relaxes in the evening.
I was there for 2-1/2 weeks and spent a lot of time in Lhasa as well as trips to Gyantse/Shigatse, Nakchu for horse racing festival and day trips to monasteries out of town. If you are planning any trips outside of Lhasa you'll need a good Landcruiser.
