Thoughts on my Indonesia Itinerary
Hi all,
I'm planning a 3 week trip to Indonesia next month and would like some feedback on our potential itinerary.
We're thinking of staying in the following places (in order):
- 5 nights Sanur, Bali
- 3 nights in one of the close by Islands (Lombok/Gilli T)
- 3 nights in Yogyakarta, Java
- 1 night in Medan, Sumatra
- 6 nights in Bukit Lawang, Sumatra
We like chilled outdoor activities. Enjoy being around animals, some sightseeing and moderate trekking. Can anyone advise if the above itinerary would suit us? Or highlight any areas of concern.
Appreciate any advice and information.

Given those interests, probably not. Not too many animals or trekking to be found during your eight days beach time, though I guess that is where Sumatra fits in. Three weeks is not a lot of time for five destinations. Every time you change location you will lose the best part of that day, especially travelling by air.
A few years ago we spent a month or so in Indonesia flying into Jakarta and then taking the train down through Java before getting the ferry to Bali (I think Sanur + Gili is beach overkill , at least for me!) . A highlight for us though was when we flew Bali to Sulawesi- could easily have spent the whole three weeks there.
I would rather spend some time in Ubud in Bali than two beach destinations. Lots of decent treks and bike rides from there, plus it is the cultural centre of the island.
