I love Mr Cool Cat "The Viceroy"! Inches mind, HE is king of the jungle!
Luck of the safari draw...how true, Inquest. My experiences in two different trips to Nagarhole illustrate that : on the first trip, there were wonderful sightings including numerous elephants and a tiger at lake's edge; the next time 6 yrs later was a "dud"--so boring that my friend and I fantasized about seeing Sasquatch.
As you wrote, in the intervening yrs the nature of trips into the forest, and the vehicles themselves, had changed--first time was from a lodge not far form the Kabini River Lodge (Jungle Resorts) with excellent private safari vehicles. (Cant recall its name then, it 's now The Serai.) The most recent visit in early 2015, from the too-resorty (imho) Orange County (now inexplicably called Evolve Back) involved herding visitors from all the surrounding lodges onto large govt run busses.
(If interested, there's the Indian Wild Ass sanctuary in the Little Ran of Kutch in Gujurat. At the very laest, the critters' name makes for smiles. Just me, driver, and guide in a small jeep, with only one other safari vehicle seen in this vast salt desert! It was quite the experience! One day I'd love to see the lions at Gir also in Gujurat State.)

Rann of Kutch is very much on the radar Cali, like you describe, I hear its an ethereal place especially during the full moon when the 'white ' desert is lit.Of course not to mention the 'wild ass'. I would like to time it during the Rann Utsav or the desert festival where the glorious past of the Kutchis is captured in its traditions and culture is celebrated. Its said, its a 3 month festival and I guess I've missed the '17-'18 season. The '18-'19 probably would be Nov to March.
You'll agree the vibrancy of Gujarat cannot be explained and words are inadequate. It has to be seen and experienced. Hopefully soon.
I've been to Gir,many moons ago, and really loved the lions, they were more pussy cats as compared to their ferocious cousins in Africa,I suspect they were hand-raised, to an extent we had the ranger grappling with a carcass of a goat, tugging at it while a lion clung on to it on the other end( I was not in a zoo,for sure)...all for a photo op.It was the most hilarious, dangerous, bizarre & crazy incident I ever witnessed !! Their proximity to humans were akin to street curs in India.
Just to support my theory, here are a few youtube videos which went viral years ago
...and the moron of the year award goes to...
