I love the air passing through your hair ( not in heavy traffic but going through the nearest temple area late afternoon.. it is so quaint and I think let's you take in the "feel" of the place better. But I totally agree, in general.. a car with AC is a blessing. Also the cool wipes sitting in ice water. I took a few washcloths from home and zip lock bags. It was wonderful to put that COLD water on our faces with a nice terry cloth towel.

we did one day to the closer ruins in a tuk tuk. the next day we went to Bantey Srei and some of the ruins a bit further and did a car. Our driver expressed gratitude that we requested the car. He said driving the tuk tuk int he elements can be draining.

We went to SR during the last two weeks in December almost six years ago. The weather was perfect (low '80sF at night, mid '80s during the day). We did have a car for most of the time, but a tuk tuk would have been fine for visiting the closer temples - I used one by myself for shopping and a repeat visit to Angkor Wat when I couldn't mobilize the rest of the family.
Also walked a LOT - great strolls in the evenings.

For our official touring, we used one of Ponheary's guides (and also spent time with Ponheary) - at the time I think the price was $80 a day for four people for the guide + driver. You can click on my name for more about our adventures and misadventures.
