Thai Banks to Start Charging ATM Fees

Sorry guys, but as of 17 April 2009, most Thai banks will start charging a 150 Baht fee for using a foreign ATM card in Thailand. This affects all banks that are members of the Thai ATM Pool, which is just about all of them.

It doesn't matter if your bank advertises their ATM as free of charges, this fee will be tacked on to the amount you withdraw when the charge is made to your bank.

This is really bad if your bank already has high fees for using your ATM outside the country. For example, B of A already charges $5 plus exchange charges for foreign ATM usage. Now you'll pay almost another $5 on top of that.

It will be interesting to me to see how this works. My bank will reimburse fees charged by banks for the use of the ATM, but I know there are some limitations. 150 baht is a steep fee.

I may have to go to carrying cash.

Hmmm - just in time for us - we arrive on the 20th. Read the fine print - it is likely that your bank will only reimburse you for domestic ATM charges.

Well, according to Bob (rhkkmk), my future employer Morgan Stanley (after they merge with Smith Barney) will reimburse the fees if you have a brokerage account with checking/debit card privileges.

Travelanytime - you always hear it first here on Fodors - unless you follow the right people on Twitter.
