Just reading your messages and wanted to through my "mission" in to see if you've ever stopped in CAI on your travels. We're about T minus 25 days and its IAD(DC) - CAI(Cairo) - BKK - Phuket - BKK - HNL - IAD!!! Whooo Hoooo! Can't wait...all around the world, strange concept...1st timer!

We used sidestep.com for all bookings and we just did one way tickets to 3 destinations from DC to Cairo for a peak at the pyramids and such, Cairo to Bangkok, bangkok to honolulu, and then honolulu to back baltimore (home). It was more expensive then flying direct from NY to BKK and back, but we wanted to stop other places. Cost was $1900 per person including all taxes and fees. We haven't booked inner Thailand flights yet. We tried getting a "round the world" ticket, but never could get straight answers from the on line companies, so we just went with one way flights and a bunch of different airlines, based on price. Hope that helps.

bwm: that's great; the price does not seem to be bad at all. Did you get conjuncted tickets between the different air carriers so that if you miss a scheduled connection you will be covered, or are you taking a stop-over between all the different air carriers?
I am curious about this as I intend to do something similar in the future.

Please don't scare me! Conjuncted tickets?!?! Not even sure what that means, but I hope this helps. We purchased each leg of our trip separately, so I'm assuming that means they're not conjuncted. The flight from DC to Cairo takes us through Germany for a few hour layover and plane change, but that's just the way it was sold with one layover. The next flight is from Cairo to BKK and it was bought separate from the first flight, but since we plan to be in Egypt for a few days, I guess that gives us some leeway if we get caught up somewhere unpredicted. So, we just bought each leg separately, but yes, we plan on staying at each location a several days before leaving for the next location. We just decided on how long at each location/country before buying all the tickets. And, we let price decide the country. We were up for going to Greece, Rome or Cairo before BKK and Cairo had the best fare, so pyramids, here we come. If I can help anymore just ask. I'll let you know how it worked when we return in March!

the marriott in cairo is fantastic...old palace with hi-rise added on...on an island...just in case you need a hotel there...
speaking of marriott, don't miss the bangkok marriott resort and spa...one of the least expensive hotels on the river and imo the best...

Sorry to give you a scare, I'm sure everything is cool. I think that any journey booked as a single journey but involves more than one airline is covered if the first does not get you to your connecting flight on time (I saw a post on that here sometime ago). Many times two airlines don't use the same terminal or sometimes not even the same airport so that can also be a factor.
Happy travels.
