staying overnight at tong's fishing village in bangkok

Tong is suggesting that I stay overnight with her at the fishing village. She says it will be exactly the kind f "different" "people" "non touristy" experience I say I want. Has anyone done it?

I think my group was the one that begged her to let us stay!

You will be in a stilt house over the water, really out in the middle of nature. There are beds out in the covered lanai area and if the weather was rainy, there is an enclosed room (with thatched sides) as well.

Certainly not "heavenly beds" and any shower will be from a bucket or hose, but there is a western style toilet!

I would love to do it, especially if I got more than one of the delicious meals!!

So you sleep outside? How do you think a 62 year old non-camping type woman would do? I must admit I'm tempted but nervous.

No, you do not sleep outside. There is a covered room/sleeping area but I agree that weather would be critical..I would not want to be out there in the pouring rain. And there is no power but they do have those portable lanterns..

I think it would be dreamy to stay there as long as you are prepared to rough it ever so slightly.

My kids thought it would be the coolest thing to do an overnighter. We had a great time with Reet & Tong but an overnighter- sounds like a night to remember. You will literally be in the "middle of the ocean" but I do understand your concerns. Be prepared for a lot of down time- no electricity but plenty of clean water & great eats & WONDERFUL company. Wow !!! An overnighter with Tong, even I am tempted to do that !!!

Gloria...consider if you are able to stay in a place built entirely of bamboo. It's sturdy and bamboo is very strong. You can see through the floor down to the water. You get up to the platform/house by climbing a steep bamboo ladder...up isn't bad, but down can be challenging if you are spooked by heights and see-through "stairs."

There is a toilet and sink, western style with water from a barrel with water you scoop from a barrel. I slept in the afternoon after lunch on a bamboo table thing that was not uncomfortable. There were beds in the room. There would be little privacy, if any, so if that would bother you, I would not recommend it.

I know that most people really love the fishing village, but we were not wowed like most others. We spent a long time just riding around in the boat (though through the mud was cool). We did not like feeding the monkeys, both because I don't like the idea of feeding wild animals like a tourist attraction and because they were somewhat aggressive and I did not feel like it was entirely out the question that one would bite if given the chance.

Overall, it was nice, different, and interesting, though more of a spectator type activity than hands on, for us at least. Maybe we are just hard to impress.

Gloria-while I cannot say how staying the night would be, I can assure you that the fishing village had no other tourists when we were there. It won't be as comfy as the O.

I slept on the same thing Kim did, but at 6'3" I was much longer than it was. Tong gave me a report about the first time she took someone there for the night, and tells me every week about how we have to stay all night next time. I hope if you do stay that Reed brings you a nicer bed!!!! I doubt that we will do it when we go back this year because I doubt I would sleep at all. Now I am sure that when we take our son there next year we will have to stay!

My gut tells me Bob is right and that it is not for me. Have a feeling that at my age I'll enjoy the place even more if I go home to an airconditioned room and a comfortable bed at the end of the day.

Hi Gloria,

My name is Todd and last October I spent 3 days with the wonderful Tong and spent a night at the fishing village. I have read what has been said and agree with some of the posts re the bedding and mod cons. But it's what you make of it really. We had a wonderful time there and I would recommend it to anyone to just give it a go , it's only one night. Regarding downtime we were on the go for most of the stay there. Reed and his family and little Titain are just great fun.The only draw back I found was at night when going to bed was the noise of the fisherman in their long boats going past. But I found that a small price to pay for such a wonderful experience. To wake in the morning to see the sunrise is amazing. I'm happy to tell you more about the trip if you like and I'm also in the middle of doing a review for Tong's website which I hope I will have done sooner than later.I think it's an amazing place and would go back there in a heart beat and stay even longer if I could , but that's me.

Thanks, Todd. I'd love to know more about School for the Poor. Where is it? And can you tell me (and all the others who frequent this board) about it?

Thanks
