LP says the outlets encountered are "bewildering" in number.

Realistically, what have you encountered at hotels during your stay in Sri Lanka? British style slotted prongs or European pin style or something else?

I understand the airport in Colombo/Negombo has adapters but... 1) Our electronics have Australian diagonally slotted prongs, so maybe not the easiest to find in foreign places on the female/device side. And 2) we arrive at 1am, so wasn't sure the airport shops would be operating.

There are a variety of styles used here.

Older round pin, (both 3 pin and 2pin) is common in older buildings, most newer buildings including newer hotels use UK style 3 square pin 13A plug. Cheap Chinese adapters are freely available in small hardware stores found in all towns for about Rs 200 (US$ 1.50) and this should cover you. Alternatively, best is to have a modern multi travel adapter which will cover all situations.

I may go with the hardware store version. I can't tell you how many adapters we've lost after we've gotten home (we've moved house frequently)... but otherwise the multi-travel adapter looks like a great investment.

Thanks, Mohammed by the way. We'll pick up one of each (or a combo) at the Melbourne airport on the way out since we don't know how old all the hotels we have booked are. One I know is pretty old. I thought maybe the likelihood was that one of style or the other wouldn't be very common.

Wow, that website (which looks familiar from past trips) seems to be a lot more certain as to outlet configuration (Euro style three round pin) than LP, Mohammed or the other sites I've seen.
