Southeast Phuket

My daughter is teaching in the southeast part of Phuket. We are traveling to see her in December. Does anyone have recommendations for resorts in that area? Most of the resorts seem to be on the west coast. Also, how easy ( or difficult ) is it to travel around in Phuket? We know almost nothing about the area, so we would appreciate any help!

Since your daughter is living in Phuket why not ask her for some help? She should know your tastes in accommodation, etc. Just don't show up suddenly to surprise her.

December is the most expensive time of the year to be in Phuket. (Especially closer to Christmas and New Years holidays.) Phuket is the most expensive city in Thailand. Bangkok is cheaper than Phuket. Transportation for many tourists in Phuket area is something visitors complain about.

Since your daughter is familiar with this area perhaps she has nailed down some cheaper rides you can use.

Use your daughter to check out some accommodation for you.

Good luck.

She's not in Phuket yet, that's part of the problem.

For Phuket you can try a city hotel in Phuket town, which is on the Eastern side of the island and they should have some good rates. Otherwise check web site such as Sawasdee.com or Agoda.co.th for accommodations and prices. Use Google map to determine the approximate location of the hotels.

Getting around in Phuket - from the airport at the Northern end of the island it will take you around 1 - 1.30 hours to drive to the Southern end. From the West, let's say Patong, it will take you around 30 - 40 minutes to drive to Phuket town on the Eastern side. A rental car would be most convenient IMO and companies such as Avis and Thai Rent a Car are well represented in Phuket. Make sure you have an international driver's license if you choose to do this.

December is a good time to be in Phuket but hotel rates are at their peak. Good luck and enjoy!

Sorry when I read "My daughter is teaching in the southeast part of Phuket." I assumed she had been there for some time teaching.

In that case perhaps the school she will be teaching at will at least have a fellow expat who can help her with her lodging.

Ajarn is an expat forum for teachers in Thailand. Thai Visa Forum also has a section for teachers.

I am assuming she has a definite employment start date. And the necessary Work Permit to allow her to work in Thailand legally.

Good luck.

it's easy to get around, especially if you rent a car... I often rent from pure car rental in Phuket.

as for a place to stay it largely depends on what you wish to pay and as said above December is the most expensive time, and many places will be booked already.

I find Phuket town has very little redeeming value and I would be careful where I book there.

I would ask your daughter to email her employer and ask for alternatives for you. YOU NEED A/C AND A WESTERN TOILET.
