Six Must-See Places in This Lifetime

I've been enjoying reading the "Wowed" and "Not Wowed" list as it has given me some more travel ideas.

I was wondering what are six places, that you have NOT been to yet, but are on your MUST-SEE or really Want-to-See list.

Most of us, on this forum, have been to a lot of places and over many decades. But, there are still some places that we haven't made it to yet, but need to maybe try harder to get to. Smiles.

My six places would be:
1) Venice, Italy (which I'll do this year.)
2) Seville, Spain ( I have a passion for flamenco dance)
3) Senegal
4) Bhutan
5) Egypt
6) Sri Lanka

Happy Travels!

Bob, my friend who came with me to my first Boston GTG, (remember the posse of 2) has been vacationing in Croatia for years. His wife, of more than a decade, is Italian and he said the Italians have been vacationing there for quite some time.

They started going shortly after they got married. They'll probably be going more as he will be retiring early (55) at the end of this month and moving to the condo that he bought about 5 years ago. The condo is near Venice which is why I will finally get to see Venice! They've been commuting back and forth to each other their entire marriage. He lives on the east coast and she in Italy. Happy Travels!

Only six? Well, I guess these are top of the (long) list:

Central Asia - all of the 'stans, but especially the mountains in Kyrgystan and Tajikistan, and Bukhara and Samarkand

Tibet - one way by train, and perhaps one way overland from -

Nepal - I've been to Bhutan, but not Nepal

Taiwan - I've been to China three times, but I want especially to see the museum in Taipei

Peru and Bolivia - Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca

Iran - I'd like to add it to the Central Asia trip, but I hate the idea of having to cover up all the time

So many places, so little time...

1. Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca

2. St. Petersberg

3. India, especially places like Assam and Kashmir

4. Syria

A number of places I want to visit are currently war zones, so they may not be for this lifetime:

5. Afghanistan and Pakistan

6. Iran and Iraq

Like others, I could go on and on...

And I don't know where to put Burma... I really want to go there, but have such strong feelings about the junta I have not gone.

I agree, it's hard to limit it to six, but here's my list:

1. Egypt (leaving in just over three weeks!)
2. China
3. Bhutan
4. India
5. Rwanda (or Uganda) for gorilla tracking, together with a safari in Tanzania
6. Turkey

And to those who listed Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca - good choice! My trip there with my daughter in October 2007 ranked right up there with the Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia trip that so many of you helped me plan a few years ago. My trip report is being quoted in the new Fodor's Peru guide.

Rwanda- That sounds quite interesting. I've thought of it,too. Quite a few well-known folks have bought property there. Quincy Jones has a big piece of land on which he's to build a house.

There are some very nice townhouses that have been built and it's been said that it's a good place for people in the music industry as the music there is quite interesting. It's also very inexpensive to buy a place to live. The country is going through a sort of renaissance. Happy Travels!

Good thread, Guen.
My choices are:
1. Rajasthan...in more detail (We have been to India many times, but now I really want to go for adventure).
2. Dordogne in SW France
3.Bali
4.Luang Prabang & Vietnam
5.Sri Lanka
6. St. Petersburg

And more....

rhkkmk...Bob, when you go to Croatia, I recommend going to Plitvice park. It's a beautiful series of 16+ waterfalls over 2 miles long.

And yes, Guen, Italians vacation in Croatia a lot.(Italian and Croatian kings have swapped territory back and forth over time, so there is a strong Italian connection there)

1. India
2. Africa on Safari (not sure which countries yet)
3. Egypt and Jordan
4. Bhutan
5. Argentina
6. Peru

I would have added Vietnam, but we are going in July.

There are also a lot of "must-see in a lifetime" places out there where I've already been and happily return to again and again; Italy, France, Spain, Thailand and Cambodia for example.

Brazil is fabulous and a trip to the Bahia region, up north is a must. Salvador, in Bahia is beautiful as is the island called, "Taparica?". You just go to the boat harbor in Salvador, and take the one hour ferry over to it. When you get there, take a taxi to the beach. There's a restaurant where I had some of the best fresh lobster that I've ever had. A table and 4 chairs were set up in the sand and whatever the fisherman brought in is what we ate. Priceless.

And there were local kids riding their horses bareback on the beach. Just a real relaxing few hours over on the island. Happy Travels!

Great question Guenmai!

Limiting my "must visit" list to just six, I would include:

Cape Town, South Africa
Peru
India/Sri Lanka
Maldives
New Zealand
Mali (would love to say I've been to Timbuktu!)

Gpanda-I just dug up my old journal and I was in Bahia in August of 2003. It doesn't seem that many years ago. Anyhow the name of the island is: "Itaparica" and the ferry fare was 2.85 Real back then (US$1.01). The exchange rate back then was 2.80 Real to 1 US dollar.

I stayed at the Bahia Othon Palace Hotel, Avenue Presidente Vargas 2456, Onide Beach. (This is in Salvador, Bahia).

I REALLY liked the hotel and although I had booked a standard room, they upgraded me to the top floor , after I asked to be put on a high floor. They sent me to the executive floor, and at no additional cost. I paid US$99.00 a night. My room was large and beautiful and the ocean view spectacular. I had room 1220.

Plus, there were only two other rooms occupied on the entire floor. The view, from the private dining room, overlooking the ocean, was spectacular! It was great to have that private dining area, attached to that floor only. It was very quiet and relaxing and many mornings I had the whole restaurant and lounging area to myself.

Oh, I just noticed, in my journal, that at the restaurant on Iltaparica, we got 3 lobsters, a whole fish, rice, bread, potato chips, and drinks for 69,95 Real (US$24.98 then). That fed three adults and a child. I went with one of my best friends, her husband, and small child. She's married to a man who happens to be from that area. And she's been there many times, even way before she knew him, back when she'd travel there alone.

That was the only restaurant, on the island. Maybe things have changed now, I don't know.

Another good place to eat, in Salvador, is the restaurant inside the Sol Victoria Marina Hotel. Actually, we were going to the Thai restaurant at the same hotel. It's really interesting in that to get to the Thai restaurant, you have to board one of those big glass bubble transporters that's attached to wires and then you glide over the ocean..incredible view...and when it lands, you're at the Thai restaurant right on the water. we ended up just having drinks there as they weren't open for food.

So, we got back into the huge glass, bubble transporter and ascended to very high heights to be lifted back up to the landing of that hotel at the top of the hill. We decided to just eat at the restaurant at the top of the hill. We ate outside on the patio and the food was delicious. I had a delicious salmon dinner with almond sauce for 24.50 Real (US$9.60).

Here's another restaurant, but in the colonial part of the city of Salvador, Bahia. My friends have eaten here for years and locals would be walking down the street, peep into the restaurant and spot my friends and come a running to greet and hug them. They go to Salvador, usually every other year, but sometimes more often, and always in August.

The restaurant is: Restaurant Encontro dos Artistas
Rua Francisco Muniz Baretto 13/15
Pelourinho
CEP:40.025.100
Phone: 321-1721
We had a whole fish and with potatoes, rice, fries, salad, beer, and 4 sodas. My portion of the bill was 20 Real (US$7.14). We again were three adults and a small child. Happy Travels!

Thanks HT- But I won't need a hotel since my friend bought a condo, outside of Venice, and is flying there, from the East Coast, to meet me so that I can stay with him and his wife. She lives in their new condo year round. He bought it before the building was built, by a plan, and then waited some years until the project has been finished. The condo is only 30 minutes away, by car, outside of Venice. Happy Travels!
