Sher Bagh- 2 nights or 3?

We can get tents here from Dec 10 to 13, but I'm wondering if this is too long.

We plan to take the train from Delhi, then back, or could take the train to Jaipur for a night, then Delhi. (I was in Jaipur in August).

I understand the train is about 5 hours from Delhi..any ideas how long with a Jaipur detour?

Hoping to hear from all you regulars. This trip is really last minure, and I'm using half my budget calling daughter (who's in Bangalore) to work out the details!!

You will probably run into people at Sher Bagh that are staying there for a week or more. The longer you are there, the better your chances are of seeing a tiger. On the other hand, you do not want to spend all of your time doing game drives so take at least one afternoon off to go see the fort and to visit the two or three stores along the main road. There are other activities that are offered at Sher Bagh as well - you could e-mail them for details. You need to make your game park reservations right away, especially if you want to ride in a jeep instead of a canter (which you do!) - you can do that directly through Sher Bagh. It will be VERY cold in the morning so remember to bring hat, winter coat and gloves for the game drives.

Jaipur is not really on the way. By car it is about 5-1/2 hours so figure 3 hours by train. Ranthambore is about 3-1/2 hours by car - I would go by car as it is very scenic along the way from Jaipur. Of course you really won't have much time in Jaipur if you just spend one night. You need two half days to do the city palace area and Amber Fort.

Ranthambore - Delhi by train takes more than 5 hours - the train leaves at 12:40 PM and gets into Delhi at 7:00 PM. The train station is about 1/2 hour from Sher Bagh.

Good luck in your planning - post back if you have additional questions. You will love Sher Bagh by the way.

Ok, I thought Jaipur was on the way (got to get the map out!) Since we were in Jaipur in August, I guess we'll just take the train from Delhi.

Did Durjay book this for you? I tried to book direct, and they want me to wire a deposit. I may call durjay and see if he can do it the dame price with a CC. Guess he could arrange the trains as well! Will Sher Bagh arrange daily drivers if we stay longer and want to go into town?

Thanks!

Durjay only takes Amex for deposits. Otherwise you have to wire the money. I actually applied for and used an Amex card for the sole purpose of charging my deposit. I don't think at this late date you will gain anything by dealing with Durjay but yes he could arrange the train and everything else. Even if you use Durjay, arrange your game drives through Sher Bagh - he uses an agent near Ranthambore so you are better off going through Sher Bagh. Quite frankly I would book the whole thing directly through Sher Bagh - they could also probably advise which train to take from Delhi and maybe even book it for you. Wiring a deposit is no big deal other than the small cost to do it. I suggest you e-mail Sher Bagh with all of your needs - they should be very helpful and if they can't arrange a driver for you there will be a small group that they will take into town and also to see the sights.

I comp agree with Craig that u will love Sher Bagh. I always encourage people to stay there - it may not have Vanya Vilas' luxury but it has a charm and safari feel entirely its own. Do go to Vanya Vilas for a meal though! I think How much time do you have in Delhi? You could add a night there or at one of the resorty spots outside Delhi which may be en route driving and are gorgeous - take a look at www.neemranahotels.com or Tikli Bottom.

we stayed at Sher Bagh last Feb and loved it. It is very cold in the morning so make sure you take a good sweater. We drove from Delhi to Jaipur about 4 hours(sunday early morning drive) had lunch ad Ramabagh and drove from Jaipur to Rant.. I think we left Jaipur at around 2 PM. We arrived to Rant... at around 8:00 PM. We went on two rides the next day and left for Jaipur at around 10:00 AM the next day. third. I thought two nights in Rant was plenty.
