Patrica -

I have not been to Shanghai but urge you to stop in HK. We loved HK. Strongly recommend 3-4 days in HK and possibly a day trip to Macau. Depends on what you like.

If you would like to email regarding HK please feel free. I would be happy to answer any questions. I have been there twice.
<BR

I spent 3 days in Shanghai and that was enough to see the Bund, old Shanghai, Jade Buddha temple, Yu Garden, the Museum, and the acrobatic show, and shop. The designer shirts were quality-made for $5; don't know if they're real or not. Clothes are very reasonable.
Spend a few days in Suzhou to see 1 or 2 gardens, the Grand Canal, the leaning pagoda at Tiger Hill, silk factory, and the embroidery institute, and shop for silk.
Take a cruise on West Lake in Hangzhou, visit a tea farm, and see Lingyin temple.
You should visit Hongkong since you're already in that part of the world.

Completely agree. No more than 3 days in Shanghai and take daytrip to Suzhou. I was there with a school group for five days. In that time, I had morning classes and company visits in the early afternoon, but I still visited the Bund several times, took a three hour harbor cruise, visited Yuyuan Gardens and the French Concessionist area, and spent a day in Suzhou (by train). I also think you will want at least three days for Hong Kong. If you are not planning to go to Beijing, I would definitely try to have at least 2-3 days there to see the Temple of Heaven, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Great Wall, and Tiananmen Square.

Generally, I agree the above comments. Last October, we spent 9 days in Hangzhou (5 days), Suzhou (2 days) and Shanghai (2 days). We visited a lot of places in Hangzhou, including the tide in Qiantang River (only happen in Oct). So, you can spend 2-3 days instead and spare 2-3 days in Hong Kong. We always welcome you. You will be impressed in HK (not only my comment, but also from other visitors).
Several direct flight to HK everyday from both Shanghai and Hangzhou. If you decide to travel Hangzhou and Suzhou, I suggest you to take the night boat (leave at 5:30pm and arrive at 7am) to save time and money. We really enjoy that experience.
If you have any questions about the three cities and of course HK, just email to me.
