Shanghai Markets?
i'm going to shanghai for just a day or so...only have the afternoon of Sunday free.
i used to go to a market to buy knock off puma & pearls & luggage. i'm completely blanking on the name. but someone told me that it had been closed in december.
can anyone recomend a good market for pumas/pearls/fabrics? i'm staying near the train station (taking monday morning train to suzhou for business)
thanks in advance.

Don’t know the name of the market, but you might want to think twice about buying fake shoes or clothing, there was just an article in the Hong Kong papers this weekend about clothing in China (fake and otherwise) have much higher than permitted levels of formaldehyde. The legit manufacturers are of course testing and rejecting the stuff that is too high, but not so the case for the fake stuff. Just food for thought there, and perhaps a really good reason not to buy fakes...

I believe you meant the Xiangyang Market, which was closed 6/30/06. The vendors have scattered underground all over the city.
I don't know about fake puma and luggage (the fall apart real fast), for pearls and fabric, check out the large department stores in Shanghai and Suzhou.

If you HAVE to get knock-off goods, I came across an article about it dated August 2006 about where to go after the closing of the Xiangyang Market; so the information should be quite current:
http://www.marc.cn/2006/08/new-xiang...-shanghai.html
I myself was looking for the Fish, Bird, Flower market which was in Jiangyin Lu, which I read somewhere had moved to HuangJiaQue Lu in 2001; but I could not find a confirmation because many websites I came across still list the market at Jiangyin. You can never tell if the information on the web is up-to-date.

I'd say the most popular place for fakes is Yatai (Century Ave at Science and Technology Museum metro stop 2). Start negotiating at 20-30% of the opening offer. If they let you walk away, know that you went too low and try a higher amount at another vendor cuz you see the same thing over and over. I know of 3 qualities of fake watches - listen to them and you'll hear the difference. Remember that fakes are not usually good quality and fall apart or look like crap fairly quickly. Vendors may say they're "overruns" or 4th shift but I wouldn't believe it.
Another option that I prefer is HongQiao Pearl City at the corner of Hongmei Lu/Yan'an Lu in the HongQiao district. 1st floor is shops with silk duvets, chinese silk items, fake coats, fake and unbranded purses and the like. 2nd floor is a big room with booths selling fresh water pearls and other things to make jewelry. They can copy designs from a picture. Out front there's a shop a friend recommends for golf stuff. As you exit Pearl City's front door go across the road a bit to the right and you're at Hongmei Lu Pedestrian street. There's lots of restaurants and bars there.
Shanghai expat.com has a thread about fake market prices. They're old but you get the idea. I'd think prices would be low this time of year since there aren't many tourists this time of year.
