I read that one could get to the DMZ by public tour bus...which is cheaper than the tour companies there. is this something that could be done in 5-6 hours so we wont miss our flight?
We arrive at 9am and leave around 4pm.

You won't arrive in time to take the tour, but the timing of it indicates you would have sufficient time to go and get back.

Keep in mind that Incheon (the major international airport for Seoul) is located about 2 hours from central Seoul -- for example from Lotte World...There are some tourist related information at the airport and your husband might be able to visit some near-by (Incheon) temples...or museum of masks...But overall time will be tight. If you are still interested in going downtown, then you can see my posting on that at http://site.chinafinds.com/blog/2006...avel-in-seoul/
