Royal Orchid Sheraton Redux

Once again, we will be staying at the ROS in November. We've booked six nights using Starwood points. It is FREE. While I admit that there are more luxurious hotels in BKK, you can't beat the price. Every time I use my AMEX card, I recall the ROS and the many good times. I actually feel good spending money. For those of us captivated by BKK, it's very pleasant.

BTW, Starwood points can also be used for frequent flyer miles, but the value is three times higher (3.5 cents v. 1 cent) when using them to book hotels.

I also note that we looked at the Marriott, but as Bob has noted, their prices have shot up as the dollar has plummeted.

Jeane and I will be thinking of you as we ride Thai Air's business class for free (value 7 cents per mile) for the third year in a row next February.

I very much like your idea of recalling time in Bangkok every time one uses his or her charge card. What a pleasant way to spend money.

We are actually looking at the Marriott for a short stopover at the end of our Sri Lanka trip (and the Penn, of course, for the stopover at the beginning). Too bad the Penn doesn't take points or miles.

FREE. FREE. FREE. Well-located. Great Pool. Next to the river ferry. Walking distance to the Gallery Cafe, Harmonique and Tongue Thai. A sauna that opens at 6:00 a.m.. WiFi. A 7-11 and ATM within walking distance. FREE. FREE. FREE.

To what does one walk from the Marriott? How many suits can Jack make? In what province is the Marriott located? Does Bob end every sentence a preposition with?

K-yes, I do. We use it for everything, including Whole Foods. The points really mount up. Usually, we can stay for free at Sheratons or Meridiens for the majotity of our time in Thailand. It makes a yearly trip much easier.
FREE. FREE. FREE.

Congrats Andy! Can't get much better than a free room. Did you book a "towers suite" and if so did you do it online or call? We are thinking of staying there on our next bkk adventure.

Aloha!

Craig-just jealous.

L-yes, it is the best located of all the hotels. This is a large part of why we return.

HT-no, we're not staying in the towers. In the past, we've paid 1500 extra points per night for a "towers" room. It was the same as a Deluxe on a higher floor with towers privileges. We decided not to use the points this year. We do not drink, so the cocktail hour id not useful. If you do enjoy a glass of wine. etc., the c-hour would be very nice.

We booked on the phone-800-325-3535, a call center in Ireland.

Congrats Andy!
I have the AMEX SPG card too, but I've yet to use my points. I've saving them to add them to my AA miles for next summer.

Do you think a regular room there at $113 is a good value? I can get one for that by using a 50% off AMEX voucher I have.

Also, what do you do for breakfast while you are there since I assume it's not included in your FREE rate?

K-the points are worth more for hotels than FF miles. It's 3000 for a weekend night and 4000 for a weekday night.

For breakfast, we just go to the "French" Bakery around the corner in the ROS building. You walk outside, make a left from the lobby and left agin at the walkway. It will be on your left. When we know that we're going to be out for a long day, we will spring for the buffet.

About FF miles-Yes, rooms may be a better deal.
BUT, I'm trying to come up with 220,000 AA miles, enough for 2 business class seats to Asia. I need every mile I can get, so I'm going to transfer my AMEX points to AA soon. Plus, they give you 5000 points for ever 20,000 you transfer.

Thanks for the breakfast tip.

You can also possibly use one of the Starwood 50% off promos if you have their card. Do find the Tower suites to be a good deal.

most of all i have trouble with the statement that it is the best located hotel in bkk....it seems to me that either the sheraton grande or the westin or the shangri-la deserve that far more than the ROS...with.....

until they finally added a shuttle boat last year i considered them one of the least desirable locations for using public transportation---with.....the public boats stops at about 6PM so that added little to the equation---with....

the hilton is a new hotel, just opened last year....the public rooms are very nice indeed and the lounge on the top floor---360---is fantastic...best view of bangkok on the river...

the rooms are a bit weird however....they tend to be odd shapped...the exec. room is really weird...has a divider at the head of the bed with a work area behind it...makes for no other room in the room...

for two seperate nites it will however be perfect for you....

the pool is amazing...wait until you see the lounges suspended over the pool...

restaurants are good....

their boat is only ok---but it does not run too often....easy to get to river city shopping however, just across the river and even easier to get back as hilton has a small office in RC and they will call the boat for you...

The Hilton is directly across the river from the ROS. There's a cross river ferry that will take you to the ROS and a Hilton ferry that takes you to the Skytrain.
