I have seen plenty of rec. for books, maps, etc. for Thailand but what do you recommend for LP? I don't even have a guidebook yet for Laos and maybe I don't need one since my only stop there will be LP. Thanks.

I enjoy reading travel-journal type books. One of the few I found about Laos (but not about LP) was called "Another Quiet American", about a young american guy's experience living in Vientiane.

a map is really not necessary as there are only about 3 streets in one direction and 2 dozen crossing them....its all very easy....your main focus is on the main street...called "farang way"....

a guide book would be helpful to describe the temples and their locations....

It covers Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam + Thailand. What I like most is it's written less like a travel guide and more like overheard dinner party conversations with ex-pats who know the best of the best in each place.

Reason I mention it is there's quite a good chunk of info on LP (we're going in November ourselves for the first time!)

Found the book to be quite unique...a total spin on the usual Lonely Planet/Rough Guide fare.

I have a compact Insight Guide to Laos, most of which is about LP. I think it is worthwhile to have something in the way of a guidebook.

For reading, I suggest In Search of the Elephant Kings. I read it before I visited LP and I felt like I should know the people there.
