Q: Seeing Mt Fuji en route to Kyoto
Hi everyone,
Later this year, we'll be heading from Tokyo to Kyoto for a few days.
How plausible is it, if taking the shinkansen, to get off the train at the Shin-Fuji Station to spend a bit seeing the volcano from a distance?
I know we'd be better off going closer to Kawaguchik area, but that would add a lot of time we maynot have.
Thoughts?

You would want to be sure of good weather to make that stop,
That station is only served by the slowest shinkansen, Kodama. You don't want to board a train to Kyoto from there. You would need to tranafer to a Hikari or Nozomi train. Maybe going back to Shin Yokomama to do that. Or transfer at Shizuoka.
Weatther permitting, you will get a pretty decent view of Fuji-san from the right side of any shinkansen, at/after Shin Yokohama. I think you prefer the "A" seats so that you would be at the window on that side (going in either direction).
Also, you might not want to board the Kodama at Tokyo Station. Might be better to get a Nozomi to Shin Yokohama and then a Kodama. Maybe better to get a Hikari train to Odawara or Atami and then transfer to a Kodama to Shin Fuji.
IOW, check the timetables. You don't want to ride Kodama from Tokyo to Kyoto.

@mrwunrfl makes a good point about checking the schedules - you don't want to get stuck on a slower train if you're trying to maximize your time. The views from the faster Shinkansen can be great too when the weather's clear. Hopefully, the forecast will cooperate with your plans!
