Phuket-Amanpuri Hotel

Has anybody stayed at the Amanpuri lately? If so, has it recuperated from the tsunami? What rates should one expect to pay in the Christmas holiday period?

I haven't stayed at the Amanpuri lately, but I heard it's 100% recovered and operational. Till October 31 you can get a 50% discount, which means room rates start at $337,5, in the Christmas period you have to pay at least $675, prices exclude tax. The Amanresorts usually have the same fares year round but the discount now is a response after the tsunami to attract tourists.

We were there 3 years ago and found it very sterile, too formal and not worth the money. It has some understated elegance but beyong the intoductory rate, $600/day is 40-50% more than you need to spend for other 5 star hotels within 10-15 miles.
Our 6 nights was the only part of a 23 night trip that in Thailand that was a disappointment. We could have spent the extra $2000 on purchases of quality antiques in Northern Thailand.

I also stayed there about 3 yrs ago and loved it......but very reluctant to spend $600/night again.......but just reserved Sri Lanka/Aman Resorts with 50% discount!

I was traveling solo at Amanpuri. I wanted to take 1 of their yacht/snorkling tours. Only 1 other couple singed up; Amanpuri waived the min 4 persons and we 3 had the whole yacht to ourselves!

Yes, Amanpuri is a bit staid and formal but I found the staff very friendly once you engaged them. The service was exceptional and the transfers to/from hotel were the best! Large, black volvos, white gloved driver, damp cloths, drinks, entertainment syst.....beautiful!

Better hurry - discount ends Oct 31, I think!

With respect to paying $675/night excluding taxes... WC Fields said it best!
