Well she has some time to sleep on it. Maybe she needs that time to let this sink in. Lets hope so. BTW my name is Larry. Believe it or not I collect jackets (I still have one my mom gave me like 45 yrs. ago) and watches, thus my user name.
Anyway back to the issue. I will update you one way or another asap.

I actually asked one of the docs my wife used to work with who is from the Philippines and has traveled the world. He just was in Lebanon BTW. This is what he said:
"Who are they going with? If they are going with someone trustworthy and has been there it might make a difference. Martial law has been declared in Mindanao, not Palawan and the turmoil is occurring in one city of that huge island. Palawan should be safe but I understand the mom's concerns. Even the Filipino docs who grew up there but haven't been home as much as I have are feeling skittish. I myself would go but it may not be worth the worry for a parent in this political environment. There's always a risk to travel and I've found in all the countries I've been things have been totally different from what it appears in the news. Of course people are not likely to mistake me for American but even after they do their friendly attitudes have not changed. I can not speak for countries I have not been to, however."

No kidding... thankful they came to their sense and that we had resources to help with the replant/reroute ...
They left this morning for Singapore on their original flight and will not get on the connector to Philippines...
Spending two days in Singapore, flying to Bali for 6 ..3 nights in ubud and then down for 2 nights by the beach and red eye to Japan... a few nights in Tokyo and then onto Kyoto and then back to lax.
I'll enjoy the 2 weeks as an empty nester again in the meantime .
Seriously - thanks all ... what a few days it was.
Thoughts and prayers for the beautiful country of phlipines

Yes it would have except they used an app called hopper and bought a bunch of insanely cheap one-way tickets. Tickets that you and I would never do… Because of the flight times and where they're taking them I'll come back and explain the routing it's actually comical.

Yes! Sorry was replying on my phone yesterday...
They flew from LAX to Tokyo, to Singapore. I am not sure on the routing but it was 18 hours of travel plus layover in Tokyo ... originally their flight had a 10 hour layover in Singapore and then they were flying to Manila. They just are not getting on that flight.
I booked them direct from Singapore to Bali - and they have 5 nights/6 days in Bali.
3 in Ubud and 2 at the beach I believe it is in south Kuta ?
http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/indonesia/bali
They will then fly to Tokyo on a redeye and are there June 5 - June 8 and onto Kyoto.
Their flight home is interesting...
They fly from Tokyo to Chengdu China ..they land at 12:50 pm and leave the next day at 7:20 pm and fly to Hangzhou and then from Hangzhou to LAX...they arrive at LAX at 8:30 pm on Monday Jun 12.
Their flights were ridiculously cheap.
I would never.

Thanks for letting us know the outcome. I expect they will enjoy Bali.
That routing is crazy, but it is the kind of routing you get with very cheap tickets. Like many others here, I wouldn't do it now, though I flew strange routing when I was young.

If it's not too late to change, I would suggest you reconsider the Ritz Carlton. It's a luxury resort with a big pool, several restaurants and unobstructed ocean view, but the location (at the far far end of Nusa Dua) is removed from everything else. The beach is not appealing, shallow and rocky. The resort caters to honeymooners, weddings and conferences. For your daughter and friend I'd look at the west coast beaches, especially Petitenget and Canggu.

A few places to look at:
Alila Seminyak, Big, well designed and right on the beach, Walkable to everything
The Colony Small, boutique-y, not on the beach but just a short walk, fun neighborhood
Katamama, Hip and designer-y, not exactly on the beach but very close
The Legian Seminyak, very pricey, but beautiful on all levels
Tugu Canggu, Lots of culture, A little further out, but happening area
Desa Seni, Yoga and wellness, inland but good location
