Oberoi or Legian, Bali
My husband and I are spending 10 days on Bali for our 10th wedding anniversary. We're doing 5 nights at the 4 Seasons Sayan, then we would like 5 nights at a luxurious beach resort/hotel. Would you recommend the Oberoi or the Legian? We just want the best experience possible-- food, beach activities, beautiful rooms, great beach, etc.. Thanks in advance!!

The Oberoi and Legian are very close to each other on the same stretch of Seminyak beach. Seminyak is the northern continuation of Kuta. It is a wide sandy beach and goes on in either direction for miles and miles. It's a great beach for walking and people watching. The surf in the area of the Legian and the Oberoi is quite rough with big waves and frequent riptides. We swim in it, but it's only recommended if you are a strong swimmer. You'll see plenty of surfers. The resorts keep the beach quite clean but there are some days when it seems that all of Java washes up on beach. Must be something with the tides. Not a pleasant experience. Having said that I think it's the best stretch of beach in Bali. Superb sunsets!
Within walking distance of both resorts are some of the best restaurants in Bali -- like LaLucciola and KuDeTa. There are many, many others plus shops and spas in the nearby Seminyak neighborhood.
The Oberoi is quite a bit older than the Legian and, personally, I think it's showing its age. The bungalows, the pools, the grounds in general seem a bit worn around the edges. Usually the service at the Oberoi is topnotch, but I've been treated downright rudely at the garden restaurant -- very unusual for Bali. There's also what seems to me a suspicious waterway next to the resort.
I've stayed at the Legian maybe 20 times in the past 10 years and have never had a bad experience. The rooms are simple, bright and elegant. They all have splendid balconies with ocean views. The pool is beautiful and the service is attentive. The restaurant is lovely and quite good for breakfast and lunch, though the dinner menu is a bit too fusion-weird for me (and very pricy). But nevermind, there are great restaurants in the area.
The Legian has two types of accomodations -- the regular rooms, which they confusedly refer to as suites, which are right on the beach and a separate complex of villas across the road. I prefer the regular rooms because I'm a sucker for cocktails on the balcony at sunset.
