Neep Stopover b/t Cairo and Japan

Hello! I am planning an around the world trip for December 2006 and would like some suggestions for a 3 night stopover between Egypt and Japan. We have decided against India, China and Thailand (only b/c one of us has been to each of those!). I think Russia will be too cold that time of year (we are from Texas!). I was thinking about Dubai, Maldives or Singapore. Nothing too big b/c we are visiting 5 other big cities/countries on this trip. Somewhere with some easy things to see/do and also maybe a beach. We are two girls in our late twenties. What do you think??

Wow, your pictures are amazing! Thank you very much for sharing them. Your bungalow was also great! I am leaning towards the Maldives out of the three. I'm just hoping it isn't too romantic or only couples. Me and my friend are both single girls

We are going from Houston to Rio de Janeiro, then Capetown, Cairo, Japan and New Zealand then back to Houston. I think the Madives would be a nice relaxing stop before hitting our last two stops.

Thanks so much for your advice!

The Maldives are absolutely gorgeous and December is a great time of year there. Drawbacks are (i) can you get there easily from Egypt and then on to Japan or will that involve several plane changes? this would make them a little unattractive IMO, (bear in mind that once you fly to Male, you then have to take a boat or another small plane to get to a hotel, adding more time to overall travel time), and (ii) there is absolutely nothing to do there other than swimming, diving, snorkeling, etc which are all fine but your OP said you wanted some activities and a beach.

Dubai is great weather in December, low humidity and very nice temps. There is a beach there, OK but not spectacular and of course nothing like the Maldives. There are some nice beach hotels which would be pleasant, esp the Ritz-Carlton. There is a little bit of old Dubai left with a souk, but you may see enough of that in Egypt. Some very good restaurants of all cuisine types (very good Chinese in fact) and a lively nightlife. The shopping is really nothing if you are from the US, same stuff at the same or higher prices. You can go to the desert for a day or overnight, but if you are coming from Egypt maybe you will have had enough. Also, it does not make a lot of sense for a stop over as it is only like a one hour flight from Egypt.

Singapore would be a logical stopover as you could get non-stop flights from Egypt I would imagine. I know you can go non-stop to Tokyo from there. Weather is a little bit rainy in December but otherwise hot and humid as it is all year. They have pretty beaches, again not spectacular, but otherwise is a good places for a stopover. Interesting things to see and do, very good restaurants, some interesting shopping, good museums.

Hong Kong has absolutely perfect weather in December, temps in the 70s F, no rain, very low humidity. I think this would also make a very good stopover, you can probably get non-stop flights. Lots to see and do, excellent walking weather, great shopping. You can get to some beaches, although it is not exactly swimming weather, still pleasant though.

I actually think Russia might be a very good choice, primarily St Petersburg or Moscow. You are going to be heading into winter in Japan, so you will have some winter clothes with you anyway. (Take a look at weatherbase.com for temps in both in December.) The country will be gearing up for Christmas so will be decorated, and there is so much history and so much to see and do in both. If you can work out flights to either and then on the Japan, I don't think this is a bad way to go. It would certainly give you a different cultural experience as well. If you want to avoid a big city, then choose St Petersburg, which is much smaller than Moscow. Drawback would be days will be on the shorter side in December (but they will be in Japan as well.)

Sounds like a great trip overall.

Thank you very much for such a detailed reply. Your information was very helpful.

We can get to Male from Cairo through Dubai on Emirates, but the problem is leaving Male on an airline that works with our Around the World package (we're using our miles on Continental). We are now thinking going into and out of Columbo is better and will figure out if we can squeeze in the Maldives with Sri Lanka.

My friend's family is actually from Hong Kong so she has literally been there a dozen times. She's been all over China, so we decided to skip it on this trip.

I checked your temperature website (which I love btw) and Russia seems too cold for us. We have friends from there and they recommend we go when it's warmner as well. It is about 20 degrees colder than Japan in December.

Again, your information was extremely helpful in our planning! Thank you so much!
