It all depends on how you like ryokan living. Personally I could live at a ryokan in an onsen town no problem.....but that's just me

Aloha!

I am a really big Hiroshige fan. I own one of his authentic 1st ed. woodblock prints. I stayed in a ryokan in Hakone (Ichinoyu Honkan, founded 1630) which Hiroshige drew for one of his woodblocks.

Your ryokan, Yumotokan, is in an area at Lake Biwa that is well known for being a big part of several of Hiroshige's woodblock designs. In particular, his "8 Views of Lake Biwa" are very wonderful (Evening SNow on Mt. Hira, Night Rain on Karasaki, Autumn moon on Ishiyama, Vesper Bell at Mii Temple, Boats Returning to Yabasi, Geesse Flying to Rest at Katata, Sunset at Seta, Clearing Weather at Awadzu).

They are all masterieces. You might want take a look m at theas I think it would enrich your stay at that ryokan and its env

its environs.

You can view that series here, by clicking on the titles of each of the 8 prints:

Wow, emd3! They're beautiful and thank you for sharing. I would like to get a reproduction while I am in Japan. Do you know if they sell them there, and how much?

I will be staying in Tokyo my last night. Since I will be staying close to Roppongi the first 3 nights, I would like to stay in a different area of Tokyo on my last night. Any recommendations?

Thanks again.

VeeDub, I thought the same thing, that it would be nice to get an woodblock print while in Japan. I found a place in Kyoto called Daishodo that has good reproductions. link below.

I also bought a really nice repro. at a stall on the shopping street leading up to Akasuka temple (Senjosi temple,in Tokyo). The stall was about 2/3 the way from the temple gate towards the temple, on left side. High quality repro. by Eishi Hosada, framed in a silk mat, for $90. That stall has many nice framed repros. of ukiyo-e (woodblack prints).

Daishodo:

Here is another shop in the Gion area of Kyoto, although I have not been to this ne:

If you like woodblocks you might want to peruse the website of the Ronin Gallery in NYC, whre I have bought several prints.

As for where else to stay in Tokyo, I have stayed in Ebisu on my trips, so I can't help much there, except to say that I have always been intrigued with the Yanaka area of Tokyo. Almost all of the Edo areas of Tokyo were destroyed in WWII, but Yanaka has a pretty large area of Edo temples and structures. I have always thought it must be like a little Gion area (Gion is in Kyoto), but in Tokyo.

Here is an aritcle on Yanaka:

Here is a walking tour of that area that will give you the flavor:

Mara, who posts on this board (she is in Japan now) has stayed at an Inn in the Yanaka area that she liked, and it is in my list of places to stay. I'll have to dig out the name if you are interested.

Some people on here recommend Ueno as a nice area to stay in also. Ueno Park is lovely to walk through, w/several museums, temples, rental boats, monuments, a zoo, etc.

Yes, emd3, I just got home tonight from Japan.
That's the name of the inn where I have stayed - most recently last November - it is convenient - about a ten minute walk to the Nippori station on the Yamanote line where you can also take the Keisei train to Narita. I think Yanaka is a very interesting neighborhood. There is a street with temples one after another....it is more of a residential area.
