When I was in Java, I found a driver once I got there. The hotel recommended him and he was excellent. I really do think you can wait until you get there to hire a driver.

Finding a driver to take you to sites in Central Java will not be difficult. Your hotel is the best bet for a recommendation as you want to make sure to get a reliable vehicle as well as a reliable driver.

Driving from Central Java to Mt. Bromo is a serious undertaking. I wouldn't recommend it. The on-the-road time is at least 12 hours, but it could be more. Remember that the sun sets everyday at 6:00 p.m. You don't want to be driving up Bromo with an exhausted driver after dark.

Also, long distance driving isn't common in Indonesia. A driver from Central Java isn't likely to know the way to a place outside of his "neighborhood." Maps are not universally understood.

If you're intent on driving I'd do it in two phases -- Yogya to Malang and Malang to Bromo, with an overnight and a fresh driver in Malang. Or go easy on yourself and fly from Yogya to Surabaya.
